Blog Post # 6 - Style

Style

A novel that I have currently read, that I have found a stylistic device, is in the novel "Mockingjay," by Susanne Collins. In this book, there is a good use of symbol. Symbol is used, as the Mockingjay pin that Katniss had worn in the Hunger games, the first time; is now the signature mark of the rebellion between District 13 and The Capitol. The pin itself, is a mockingjay. A mockingjay is a mixture between Mutations, rebellion, survival, beauty as well as mistakes and communication. All of these have been shown during the Hunger Games, as it is a life and death situation; therefore survival of the strongest fighter. Mutations, because a mockingjay is what the Capitol has fused into this bird, creating a monstrous beauty. It also symbolizes hope; that the rebels can change what the Capitol is controlling, create a new beginning where everyone is treated as equals.
This is significant, because if Katniss had never gotten the pin during the Hunger Games, Cinna would not have gotten the idea for her to become a "Mockingjay" during the second round of the Games. The rebellion would also not have started, as Katniss would not have started something between the Districts, they would have nothing to link back to Katniss as the leader of the rebels.
